About Lynn

As a mom and advocate of environmental awareness and education, I’d like to help you stay current on environmental issues—and solutions. Specifically, environmental issues that may impact our health and, more importantly, the long-term health of our children—at home and at school. I also want to help you realize that you can make a difference.

Bottled water consumption was the catalyst for the I Count for myEARTH campaign (you can read more about what inspired the campaign on The Daily Green). Here are some quick bottled water facts…

  • It takes 3-5 liters of water to make a one liter plastic bottle. Consider the number of people in the world who do not even have access to clean drinking water and the fact that our drinking water (even unfiltered) is considered some of the cleanest in the world.
  • 2.5 million disposable water bottles are thrown out EVERY HOUR! That’s enough to reach around the equator every 2.9 days!
  • The FDA has no rules about how bottled water should be filtered or kept free of pathogens, as must be done for tap water. The National Resources Defense Committee tested more than 100 types of bottled water and found “spotty” quality, with a third of the brands containing contaminants such as arsenic in at least some samples!
  • Bottled water may actually be harming our future water supply. In California alone, more than 1 billion plastic bottles end up in the trash each year, leaking toxic additives such as phthalates, into the groundwater.
  • Disposable water bottles take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. And did you know there’s actually an area of floating debris–including plastic–twice the size of Texas floating around in the Pacific ocean? It’s killing marine wildlife and has made its way into the food chain. We actually have traces of plastic in our bodies right now.
  • 17 million barrels of fossil fuels are required to manufacture and transport—enough to fuel ONE MILLION cars for a year!

Now calculate how many disposable water bottles your family goes through in a year—and multiply that by the number of families in your child’s school. I think you’ll be astounded by the numbers.

Help support our efforts – spread the word about why it’s a good idea to switch to reusable water bottles. Join our facebook group: Rescue H2O. Bring the I Count for myEARTH campaign to a school near you.

Each and every one of us counts for the Earth…
together we can make a difference, one bottle, one family at a time.

Whether you loved or hated them, have you tried any new earth-friendly products lately?

  6. Nice and useful Blog.
There is lot much to practice in the field of Environmental conservation and protection related issues. Let more and more people from developed countries become actors in this direction. The state of affairs in the developing countries is not that conducive as they have added problems of livelihood and survival apart from these bigger environmental issues nevertheless they too have some role to play.

There’s not just one: there are two of these disgusting man-made things in the Pacific; one in the North, another in the south. And two in the Atlantic. And another in the Indian Ocean. For a total of five, worldwide. They have a name: they’re called ‘gyres’.

    Five. Gyres.

Find out more at (surprise!) 5gyres.org (please consider signing up to the plastic promise!).

And: keep up the good work! :)
