Today is Blog Action Day for Climate Change. So what better day to write about the climate and energy bill? In June the House of Representatives passed a landmark bill to reduce global warming pollution, build a clean energy economy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The bill would put Americans back to work and protect the planet. The Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act (S. 1733) includes robust short- and long-term emissions limits, effective cost-management tools, consumer protection measures and strong support for the development of clean energy technologies. Now it is up to the Senate to strengthen and pass a similar bill. Urge your senators to support and strengthen the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. And it is up to us to make our voices heard — for our children’s future!

America has reached a critical juncture on climate change. To avoid the most catastrophic consequences of global warming, the United States and other developed nations must reduce global warming pollution at least 80 percent below 2005 levels by the middle of this century — and inspire developing countries to do their fair share as well.

In June the House of Representatives passed a climate bill to reduce global warming pollution and create a clean energy economy. Now the Senate is considering the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. The bill would reduce global warming pollution by 20 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.

In addition, this new bill would support clean energy technologies and green jobs training programs, as well as reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And new analyses show that strong climate and energy legislation would create as many as 1.9 million jobs and boost our economy.

But opponents of clean energy will be working to weaken and defeat the bill. Instead, senators need to keep the pollution reduction goals strong and increase the investments in energy efficiency.
